The Difference between Omega 3 and Omega 6’s in Regards to Krill Oil

Omega 3 and Omega 6 are two "essential" nutrients that the body needs. These two carbons are not produced in your own body so you need to incorporate them into a healthy diet or supplement to have a healthy dose of it. Both forms of acids can do different things to the body. Some of these effects can be positive and some can be negative depending on how you structure your diet. Taking supplements like krill oil will give you the most benefits from these sources than any other form of pure oil on the market because its high concentration of acids come straight from a whole food source.

To better understand these different carbon bonds, you need to understand at which point the double bond is formed on their carbon chains. The reason these are called omega "3’s" and omega"6’s" is because these double bonds are formed at these areas on a carbon chain of polyunsaturated fats. The omega 6 double bond occurs between the 6th and 7th bond, whereas the omega 3 bond occurs between the 3rd and 4th bonds.

Both forms of fatty acids contribute to the production of eicosanoids which then produce one of the following: leukotrienes, lipoxins or prostaglandins. Which one of these is made will rely on the bond used (either omega 3’s or omega 6’s).

Omega 3 is mainly an anti-inflammatory and helps with certain disease prevention. Omega 6 fatty acids can help lower blood cholesterol if it is consumed in moderation. This is the arising problem with many forms of omega 6’s. Since this form of fatty acid is more predominant in certain countries foods, the amount of obesity is increased. If you take a country like China, you will see a much lower rate of obesity here because they have a higher intake of fresh seafood, which contains a high amount of omega 3 fatty acids. In a regular diet, consumers should be health conscious in consuming a higher amount of omega 3 that omega 6. This will lower cholesterol and help with inflammatory disease and chronic pain.

Krill oil is the best way to get high concentrations of omega 3 fatty acids for essential health. Many oils in supplement form on the market contain omega 3’s in triglyceride form which is not absorbed as readily as a phospholipid bond. The phospholipid bond (which is found in pure krill oil and not in fish oils or synthetic versions of either of these), is easily absorbed into the bloodstream and will immediately begin action in your body.

This doesn’t mean that you should cut out many of the natural sources of omega 6 acids that can be derived from whole foods. Seeds and other forms of fatty vegetables and lentils (in moderation), with regular amounts of krill oil (about 500mg a day) can give you the best "essential" nutrients without the risk of obesity and cholesterol problems. –Elyse Jewell
